Blackjack’s predecessor is Vingt et un (twenty and one) which originated from France in 1700. It was then brought into North America by French colonists and spread throughout the country. It was still called 21 when gambling was made legal in Nevada. In an effort to attract more customers to the table, a bonus payout was offered. If a player gets an ace of spade and any of the blackjacks in the deck, he or she gets an extra payout. Although this bonus payout is not used anymore, the name stuck. Ever since then, the game was known as blackjack.
